Chiropractor Q&AWhat do chiropractors do, exactly? Doctors of chiropractic use a drug-free and non-surgical, hands-on approach to alleviate mechanical disorders of the joints, muscles and ligaments affecting spine and nerve function. Disruption of movement can occur from repeated mundane activities of life, a specific accident or injury or general deterioration. The purpose of chiropractic is to realign the spine through manipulation to assure proper function; reduce pain and nerve irritation, tension and inflammation of the muscles; and, promote wellness. What should I expect during a chiropractic appointment? For your first appointment, the chiropractor will likely ask that you fill out a health questionnaire detailing your health history. He or she will discuss any concerns you may have, as well as any specific reasons you chose to visit a chiropractor. If needed, an X-ray of the affected area may be taken. The chiropractor will explain what a manipulation might look and feel like; if needed, the chiropractor will perform a manipulation. He or she will then discuss any follow-up care you may perform at home, and if you need any follow-up appointments with the chiropractor. Does insurance cover chiropractic care? Like with most health care expenses, it's important to check with your particular insurance company about what your coverage looks like. However, most insurance plans do cover some form of chiropractic care. What kind of training does a chiropractor receive? Chiropractors go through four years of undergraduate study, much like anyone else in the health care industry. They will then attend a chiropractic-accredited college, where they will receive at the minimum 4,200 hours of education. What kind of ongoing training does a chiropractor receive? Georgia chiropractors must receive 20 hours of continuing education annually, and they renew their licenses every other year. Their continuing education credits include 15 hours of clinical updates that directly impact patient care. Georgia-based chiropractors are licensed through the Georgia Secretary of State's office.
